Rare Kanji of the day!

It's not like we have one everyday.. but

I'm writing to introduce you all to a rare kanji that I "believe" I saw for the first time last month. After four and more years in Japan and being always starving for kanji, seeing one for the first time gave me quite a shock, a happy one, since this never happens recently X)

Welcome our guest! : 乖

It looks like a 千 = thousand squeezed in the middle of a 北=North and the only word I know that uses it is 「乖離」 =かいり=Separation.. I think there are hardly other words that uses it. If you know more share the knowledge!
See you next post. Kanji chan logs out.

JLPT1 next July!!

I took the JLPT2 exam today!
I did well in the vocabulary/kanji and listening parts but had some difficulty with the reading part.
But in general I did good! Results will be out in mid February .. aa long time to wait..

Next year will go for level1 !

The count down to the JLPT2

Sorry for the long silence!!

One week is left for the JLPT.
I chose to take level 2 this time.

Last week I was invited to take a mock exam for the NEW JLPT.
People who follow the JLPT news know that starting 2010 the test will have 5 levels instead of 4, with a new level between the original 3 and 2 levels.
I was assigned to take this new level in the mock exam. Completed all the sections and at last filled a newspaper large questionnaire , got 2000 yen for my cooperation in taking the exam and filling the questionnaire and went back home.

My feedback about this new level(called N3) : You can get the feeling it is between L3 and L2 .. but it's kind of closer to L3.
As an L2 taker for this year, it felt really easy.. in the sense that I don't expect my mistaken answers to exceed 3 questions.

Anyway, back to the real exam talk.
Two days ago I tried to solve the last year questions from the official 2008 L2 Questions&their answers compilation.
I set a timer for each section and tried to solve the questions as if in the real exam.
... so at last I scored my answers and figured out that I got [337/400] which means84% ...
Very UNSATISFIED..!!

..but the good thing is, while looking at my mistakes and their correct answers I could learn a couple of new grammar patterns that I've never heard of before.
Will do my best in the remaining one week to get a high score!!

On the way down to Petra a month ago..

I totally forgot about these pictures! I took these pictures during my trip to southern Jordan last month and was planning to include them with the trip post.

These were taken on the road down to Petra. It was very nice to see some Japanese language there! makes me wonder-happily-, why Japanese??

Now this is really old!

I lived that time.. anybody shares the same experience?

First MS Windows I ever dealt with. It was installed on the first computer my father had when he was a new engineer

A very old version of MS paint.. It was called Paintbrush

One of the earliest 3D games.. Wolf (?)
This game used to freak me out .. when I grew up a little, I could clear it all..the final boss was really something!

Lemmings any body??
I was taught how to run it from the floppy disk by entering commands to DOS.. I remember I was very young at that time.
Kids these days have easy technology!

This game was installed on the school computers when I was in 1st grade!!

The very first version of Prince of Persia.. I loooved this game

Street fighter!!! Ryu was my favorite!

OK! not very old...maybe I was 9, but this is one of my earliest contacts with the Japanese language. I memorized how to write つばさ from this game..of course not knowing how to read it!

Oh~ nice old days!

JLPTにチャレンジしてみよっかな!

I'm taking the JLPT in December this year!
For the time being I'm planning to take the 2kyuu but feel that the 1kyuu is not impossible either.
Will study hard until the time of application and decide which level I will take by that time.

Special thanks to M川さん who could secure an application form for me while I'm here! It's shown in the picture above.. ありがとうございます!!

小浜 :: OBAMA

Some few days ago, I was walking my usual morning way to the station and thinking how Japanese-like the name Obama is.
I also went as far as flipping some kanji in my mind and created a combination for the name. I thought that the combination of 大 and 浜 would be funny.
I was surprised to find later that I wasn't so far away from an actual Japanese city name!!
The actual name is just "SMALLER" than the "BIG" one I had in my mind.
See this video about the city of OBAMA(小浜).

崖の上のポニョ

And this is Hayao Miyazaki's newest movie. 崖の上のポニョ "Ponyo on the cliff".
It was first announced around the period of my entrance exams. Glad they became a memory!:)
I would love to see this movie sometime~!
The great thing about it is that no CG is involved. An Anime that was mainly done the traditional way. See the interview below.

And here is the awesome ponyo song!(≧ω≦)

人生の目標進む君へ

Introducing one of my favorite J-pop songs.
Singing along with songs can always be a good practice to improve your pronunciation skills.
This is how I started actually. In my high school days I used to sing Japanese songs reading lyrics written in Romaji without understanding a single word! w
Enjoy!

Lyrics:

Step by step into a busy life

This is a fresh picture that I took minutes ago of my desk in the lab. It's 8:40 PM and it's still VERY EARLY to go back home..
Recently life is becoming very busy for me and I spend looooong times in the lab. Most of the time I come here at 10:00AM and leave near 11:00PM.
In other words, I use my home for sleeping only!

I have to submit my research topic (only the title)during the coming 2 days and I need to do a lot of reading before I decide~!

I forgot to blog about the fact that I was allowed to take the Japanese language intensive course level 4 !
I am really glad, even though I know this is going to make me much busier but improving my Japanese is also one of my goals.
Actually the selection was very strict because people are not usually allowed to take the intensive course twice, to give chances for new students. (We can apply but whether we are allowed to take it or not depends on #1: Number of new students, #2: result at a placement exam #3: result of an interview)...at last I was the only student of class3 who was allowed to take level 4 ^^; I am gonna miss my nice class 3 friends~

By the way, the "summer memories" series is still incomplete. I think I still have 2 or 3 more posts about it..will hopefully do them soon, but with the current commenting statistics I dont feel encouraged to write them any time soon :p
ganbarimasu!

Finally beacame a real nihongo GAKUSEI

Today was the first day of the nihongo classes.
Based on the results of a placement test, I was placed in level 3 (out of 5 levels), which is good, I think.
I will have classes every day from 1:30 ~ 5:00 divided to 2 periods, except for Wednesday where there is only the 1st period and it finishes at 3:00.

This is my desk with my name on it in Katakana and Kanji. I am glad because people are starting to use this kanji for my name when they send me an email.
The class is fun. We are 11 students and there are 9 SENSEIs to teach us and they are assigned to the classes as 1 sensei/period.
The funniest part is the conversation challenge, where the teacher puts you in a certain situation(for example imagine that you need to take a day off tomorrow, go to the teacher, tell him/her and explain your reasons....) and all is video taped.
The fun starts when all students are done and playback time starts! Everyone would start laughing at their selves and their mistakes,(especially the politeness mistakes, and believe me, I am a pro in this type of mistakes !! XD ).
That's all for the nihongo class. I really like it so much! ^_^

Yasuda Auditorium standing high in pride

A Nice view. It's near a Japanese folklore museum. It is on my way to the station

A Mosque that I see when I go walking to Shimokitazawa; a nice shopping area with reasonable prices

That's all for today.

Sayounara J.U.S.T. (T_T)

Long time no post. I have been lazy to post anything lately, even though ALOT OF THINGS that are worth posting happened.

J.U.S.T.
My university was designed by a very very famous Japanese Architect; Kenzo Tange
He has a lot of world-wide recognized works

Starting with the fresh news :

I had my last lecture ever at JUST this Tuesday.
Yesterday (Wednesday 9th of January) was the last official day for lectures/lessons and it was the day for graduation seminars . Some of my friends had seminars yesterday, so we -the senpai s who already did their seminars last semester - attended for support! Actually it reminded me of our seminar day in MAY 2007.
So now the final exams period has started..and this time they will be my last final exams as a JUST student. I only have two; on the 16th and 17th of this month.

University looks sooo empty at the last day
This was our favorite hangout place- C square
寂しそう~!

Computer Engineering Class of 2003 poster and the graduation cards
(These card are placed for graduating students each year so friends/professors/teachers can write their wishes of luck and success for students )

I never thought the day when i will have my own card will come!
ふふふ!「Engineer」と書いてある!

Now everyone has time to go out and have fun after seminars are over! ^_^
Yesterday in ViaVia cafe - Irbid mall

Congratulations for finishing the Graduation Projects everyone!
There will be another big go-out party after the finals! \(^o^)/

And now, for the older news :

I am very thankful for Y. san, T. sensei and O. sensei for attending our J.U.S.T. Japanese language class last Thursday, 3rd of January.
That was my last nihongo lecture. I am glad that students has learned alot.
Actually I didn't think that we will go that far in nihongo when i first though to open the class.

A view of the class with our guests
Thanks Dr. Abu 3ein for attending too :)

gakusei VS sensei !
Center workshop announcements in the background and our class announcement is there

Pictures with students who participated in the skits

Done by our great MANGAKA Ru2a san.

So it's over! Actually this semester was very fast, I wasn't particularly busy at any time other than exam times.
This was a VERY special semester-especially the last part of it.
Now some people can say that they studied nihongo in IRBID during a whole semester! (^o^)y

Congrats Everyone!

[ もうぐったりだ!今日の漢字の話を日本語で伝えたかったから、これは2時間ぐらいかかったポストです!日本語の間違いがありませんように!]  ^^;

I have been looking for a Kanji representation for my name for some time ago. I tried many combinations but i liked none of them. Until I came up with the kanji combination shown in the picture above.
The upper kanji can be read as AMA and the lower as NI. But this word is actually read as TENJITSU which means sunshine or sunlight ( i like the meaning but it's not read as my name).
Putting the Furigana as あまに forces the reading to be AMA NI. ^^
Ni is also used in NIHON = Japan. That's why i liked this part of the name.

The Japanese part of this post took near 2 hours..and there might also be mistakes!
While i wrote this english translation in less than 1 minute!
Well I hope more practice will result in less time soon!^^;
