To all of you applying to the MEXT scholarship

I will take some time to write a couple of notes that might be useful for scholarship applicants.

1) Carefully read and understand the notes, guidelines and the FAQ on the Embassy website.
2) Make sure to submit everything before the deadlines and the way you are required to submit it. (submit 3 copies of XX means THREE copies of XX!)
The embassy kindly provides a check list of the required stuff. Make sure to check it before submission.

*Research student? Entrance exams?
A research student is basically a non-degree student.
Before entering into the degree program, you have to pass the entrance exams of the university you are applying to. That's why the university first accepts you as a RESEARCH STUDENT (non-degree), until you pass the entrance exams.

So basically in the research student period, you prepare for your entrance exams and take Japanese language courses.

Entrance exams are held once a year (March) or twice a year(March and September) depending on your university and department.

To make things clearer, in my case I came here April 2008 as a research student. I took Japanese classes and prepared for the entrance exams during this period.
I took the entrance exams in September 2008 and started master officially in October 2008.

* Application forms : Study field? Study program?

As for the study field, just write about the knowledge you gained in the undergraduate program. I wrote stuff like :
In the OO course we were introduced to XX , YY , and how to ZZ ...
OO course provided me with a background on XX ...

For the study program, write about the things you want to study after you come to Japan and how you want to achieve your goals.
Make sure to make this field elaborative since its very important in the selection process.

For example,
I want to do my master program in the OO field.
I want to study OO from the XX perspective and investigate ways to YY.
Research goals can be achieved through experiments, evaluations to OO ...

Hope this was helpful.
Do your best and your hardwork shall be rewarded!

Sakura forecast

Today's weather forecast: The Sakura wave will start moving gradually north the country. This will be accompanied by sakura that start blooming on the days shown on the map for each area. The wave will reach its peak after one week of the dates shown. After that it will gradually weaken and light rains of sakura petals are expected.
..(I made this up but it has a lot of facts)

The sakura wave front map

The Japan meteorological agency released the sakura forecast recently. Click here to check.
In this season, you can see information about sakura blossoms and the degree of blooming after each weather forecast.

A picture from the web

Autumn leaves as well as Sakura blossoms have their own forecasts in Japan. Especially sakura trees, they have a very special place in the heart of all Japanese people. And of course in mine~

Most areas are still in the initial bud stage

It's the season where people start checking forecasts and planning their Hanami.
Here in Tokyo, most Sakura is still in the TSUBOMI = bud state, but some single trees here and there are already in full bloom. Different types I guess.

I can't believe that one year has already passed since I was last checking sakura information sitting on my desk in my room in Jordan..then to find myself after few weeks doing a real Hanami..

Anyway, I'm planning to take a lot of great sakura pictures this year so look forward for this!

Garbage separation and disposal

I found this poster in the lodge elevator the other day.
Since the new semester is starting, new students start to arrive to the lodge(which makes me a senpai!iyey!) and you can find a number of instructions about life in the lodge here and there.
This one shows the correct way to separate and dispose garbage.
I took a picture to keep as a reference, and I found out that I have a couple of small mistakes in the way I dispose my garbage^^;
Click on the picture for a larger version.

As everyone -hopefully- knows, garbage separation in Japan is very important. As a participant in the Environment Course of the Tokyo Discussion Session 2007 and as an environment enthusiastic, let me talk a bit about it.

Why separate?
Because garbage is recycled here.

What is recycling?
It means that garbage is taken to factories in order to process and re-make them into useful products.

Why recycle?

In countries with large populations like Japan, imagine what happens if you keep disposing garbage. Eventually, it will not be possible for disposal sites to accommodate the large amounts.. So recycling them and turning them into usable items instead of just disposing them helps a lot.

Then, again why separate?

To recycle waste, separation is needed. Take paper recycling for example. Paper is recycled to produce less-quality-but-still paper. If it was mixed with plastic for example, this process can't be done.

Why don't factories separate waste?
Factories receive your garbage in addition to the garbage of tens of millions of people other than you. This makes this process impossible on the factory side. That's why, a small effort in garbage separation on the individual side makes a great difference and benefits everyone.

Jordan?

There are recycling factories in Jordan. But I think paper and cans are the most recycled items. (Just a thought based on what I see, no information).
I brought samples of environmental brochures printed on Jordanian recycled paper to the discussion last year.
There is also this active Bio-gas project. (In short using the gases produced by wastes in landfills to produce energy).
Although there are separation activities and projects here and there(And there is one in J.U.S.T.), waste separation is still not imposed in Jordan.
Maybe recycling industry is still not advanced enough to benefit from the full separation process.
(For computer engineers to understand this : Imagine running a threaded process on a processor that doesn't support threads) :D

Why did I write this much?
lol
At first I just wanted to post the picture above, but before I knew it I found myself writing this much...

Now after you read this much, as a reward this is a video made by Kouki san about last year Environment Course.

I haven't seen this in a while so it brought back many memories..
I saw the professor(Kojima sensei) who was responsible about our course on a TV interview a week ago! I was surprised~

Anyway I hope somebody learns something new reading this post and not just DISPOSE it :)
