Job hunting in Japan

A real piece of art !
A little bit sad and funny at the same time but his is what job hunting in Japan is mostly about.

Of reuse and space utilization

Today I made a small extension to my kitchen! .. or what's called a "kitchen area" according to the lodge terminology lol
Now I will call this the hot drinks area.
I am very happy with it that I took a memorial picture :D

This following picture is for my dish washing liquid. I bought this during my first week here..which means half a year ago~

The used amount is much less than the half!

This would happen under 2 possibilities ->
A) I rarely wash my dishes
B) I don't have much dishes to start with.

The answer is a mix of the two above reasons :p
What I do is "Dish Washing on-Demand"..which means I wash a dish when I need it.

The last picture is for something that I saw today in the place that my neighbor Ocha san once referred to as a "Visual Crime".
I really wanted to laugh when I saw it. See and judge~!

That's all for today~

Step by step into a busy life

This is a fresh picture that I took minutes ago of my desk in the lab. It's 8:40 PM and it's still VERY EARLY to go back home..
Recently life is becoming very busy for me and I spend looooong times in the lab. Most of the time I come here at 10:00AM and leave near 11:00PM.
In other words, I use my home for sleeping only!

I have to submit my research topic (only the title)during the coming 2 days and I need to do a lot of reading before I decide~!

I forgot to blog about the fact that I was allowed to take the Japanese language intensive course level 4 !
I am really glad, even though I know this is going to make me much busier but improving my Japanese is also one of my goals.
Actually the selection was very strict because people are not usually allowed to take the intensive course twice, to give chances for new students. (We can apply but whether we are allowed to take it or not depends on #1: Number of new students, #2: result at a placement exam #3: result of an interview)...at last I was the only student of class3 who was allowed to take level 4 ^^; I am gonna miss my nice class 3 friends~

By the way, the "summer memories" series is still incomplete. I think I still have 2 or 3 more posts about it..will hopefully do them soon, but with the current commenting statistics I dont feel encouraged to write them any time soon :p

Garbage separation and disposal

I found this poster in the lodge elevator the other day.
Since the new semester is starting, new students start to arrive to the lodge(which makes me a senpai!iyey!) and you can find a number of instructions about life in the lodge here and there.
This one shows the correct way to separate and dispose garbage.
I took a picture to keep as a reference, and I found out that I have a couple of small mistakes in the way I dispose my garbage^^;
Click on the picture for a larger version.

As everyone -hopefully- knows, garbage separation in Japan is very important. As a participant in the Environment Course of the Tokyo Discussion Session 2007 and as an environment enthusiastic, let me talk a bit about it.

Why separate?
Because garbage is recycled here.

What is recycling?
It means that garbage is taken to factories in order to process and re-make them into useful products.

Why recycle?

In countries with large populations like Japan, imagine what happens if you keep disposing garbage. Eventually, it will not be possible for disposal sites to accommodate the large amounts.. So recycling them and turning them into usable items instead of just disposing them helps a lot.

Then, again why separate?

To recycle waste, separation is needed. Take paper recycling for example. Paper is recycled to produce less-quality-but-still paper. If it was mixed with plastic for example, this process can't be done.

Why don't factories separate waste?
Factories receive your garbage in addition to the garbage of tens of millions of people other than you. This makes this process impossible on the factory side. That's why, a small effort in garbage separation on the individual side makes a great difference and benefits everyone.

Jordan?

There are recycling factories in Jordan. But I think paper and cans are the most recycled items. (Just a thought based on what I see, no information).
I brought samples of environmental brochures printed on Jordanian recycled paper to the discussion last year.
There is also this active Bio-gas project. (In short using the gases produced by wastes in landfills to produce energy).
Although there are separation activities and projects here and there(And there is one in J.U.S.T.), waste separation is still not imposed in Jordan.
Maybe recycling industry is still not advanced enough to benefit from the full separation process.
(For computer engineers to understand this : Imagine running a threaded process on a processor that doesn't support threads) :D

Why did I write this much?
lol
At first I just wanted to post the picture above, but before I knew it I found myself writing this much...

Now after you read this much, as a reward this is a video made by Kouki san about last year Environment Course.

I haven't seen this in a while so it brought back many memories..
I saw the professor(Kojima sensei) who was responsible about our course on a TV interview a week ago! I was surprised~

Anyway I hope somebody learns something new reading this post and not just DISPOSE it :)

Earthquake 震度6+/ Richter 7

My day started with an earthquake when I woke up to find everything in my small room is shaking.

According to the limited experience I gained so far, I would estimate it to be somewhere between shindo3 to shindo 4 .
I wasn't that scared because I thought it was one of the usual daily life shakes, rather I was thankful for it because it saved me from oversleeping since I have a lot of things to do.
But when I searched the net later on, I realized that it's not as simple as I thought.

In fact the earthquake center was near Iwate prefecture to the north and it measured shindo6+ (around Richter 7) there!
It was strong enough to make the shaking occur in Tokyo as well.

This picture shows the shaking intensity over the different regions of Japan
I always check this page after each earthquake, but I never saw the map this "colorful" before><

You can see the NHK news footage HERE.

I hope that you have noticed that in Japan the SHINDO(震度) scale is used which is different from the Richter one. More information HERE.

And to make this post more informative(or maybe thrilling (笑)) a big earthquake is expected to happen in the Toukai area..which is called the Toukai earthquake, since the last time a major earthquake hit this area was in 1854.

..Amazingly, I remembered that yesterday before I went to bed, I was wondering about the fact that no earthquake has occurred for a while.
Shouldn't think of this anymore! ^^;

3 in 1

To the right is my favorite 柿ピー, a mix of nuts and KAKI NO TANE (KAKI seeds).
Down you can see my rail pass.. I finally got my self a rail pass for one month which will allow me to use my route unlimited times during this 1 month. (I use the Inokashira, Ginza and Marunouchi lines to go to the university everyday)...the metro trip is a COLORFUL story..I think I will talk about it in some other post,,,I am developing an obsession with Tokyo Metro ^^;

Actually this pass made a big difference! It saves me trouble of buying a ticket at each station! + It's a good deal if I compare it with the price I pay for one month on the normal tickets..I also included Shimokitazawa in my route where I will need to go often for shopping.
I have this crazy idea of going one day and getting off at each station on my route to discover the area..

To the left is the Tuna Mayonnaise(ツナマヨ) ONIGIRI. T-sensei mentioned it multiple times in his blog, so I was confident when I bought it for the first time. I like it~

Actually my first meeting (better expressed as 初めての出会い w) with this tuna-mayo onigiri has its own story too:

Once I went out to have dinner a little late. (Late for dinner in Japan means after 7:00. I went at 9:00 pm)
I found that all the near by restaurants are closed, even my usual last resort, the McDonalds.
When I stood in front of it and realized that it was closed, I recalled some memories from last year when I was here for the youth exchange program. The same thing happened once when we(the Jordan delegation) decided to go eat out and found that most restaurants were closed.

Anyway, I went back feeling down and decided to stop by a KONBINI (convenience store) to get anything for dinner. I noticed there were ONIGIRI of different types (Different fillings). I looked for the Tuna-Mayo one and there it was! I also got another one with Salmon-Wasabi filling.
....And they lived happily ever after .. 笑
I owe the onigiri a lot~ =p

I am now 1 month old in Tokyo! kore kara mo ganbarimasu!

Rain in Japan..A different story

It can rain in Japan in all seasons.
That's what I realized today.
Seeing how it rains often recently and remembering the TSUYU season in summer last year.
So rain in summer, rain in spring. Winter and fall should have rain by default ==> JA~~N , rain can fall in all seasons of the year in Japan!

So, given the above information, you can guess that umbrellas are very essential to every one living in Japan.
You might imagine the relationship between an umbrella and an individual to be so close to the relation between a samurai and his katana :p
..Actually umbrellas have their own story too!

I just finished reading an interesting page (VERY interesting actually), about rain and umbrellas.
You will see the different types of rain falls, and different types of umbrellas as well.

It also includes some cultural notes.
Please check it out :

You are so annoying~ Mr. crow!

Hey again! This time's story hero is KARASU san, or Mr. crow!
Tokyo has a lot of crows. I once watched a program on TV about how they are considered troublesome because they keep missing up with and getting out food remains from the garbage.

They are as big as a cat, and I heard from the same program that there were incidents of crows that attacked babies.

Every day every day they start performing their "Concert" from the very early morning before any other bird starts singing.
But somehow, I feel thankful for KARASU san.. you know why?
Because I wake up everyday at 5 am before my alarm clock starts ringing ^_^

jaa mata ne!
